Hi! My name is Tootsie! Because my tootsies only have 3 toes :)

I was transferred from the shelter to the rescue because I am special needs. I have Metabolic Bone Disease, also known as MBD. MBD is the result of a calcium/phosphorous imbalance in the body which causes a weakening of the skeletal structure as well as the carapace and plastron of turtles and tortoises. As you can see in my photos, the back half of my shell did not form correctly.

I have been in the rescue for over a year for observation and to ensure I was on a healthy path. My shell will always be like this but with the proper care, it will not get worse. In more advanced cases this can lead to repeated tremors, severe weakness, and bone fractures but mine was caught in time to get to this point. I am looking for a home that is willing to continue proper care of me for the rest of my life. Though I have MDN, I can live up to 70 years! I may be small, but I am a big commitment!

Even with MBD, I’m a firecracker, frisky, zealous, lively, and high-spirited! Especially at feeding time. I'm an omnivore which means while bugs are obviously my favorite, I require a diet that also includes leafy greens, lots of veggies, and a touch of fruit. I love the outdoors but I need to live INSIDE. California is not my native habitat so my environment needs to be managed and maintained. Having a safe indoor enclosure with high humidity (think Florida) is a must but also having access to fresh air, lots of exploring space, and a place to work out is great too! Most turtles like me are okay in a glass tank but for me, I need to be housed in a melamine enclosure.

If you think we may be a good match, or you would like to get to know me better, please click the Adoption Application button below and you will be contacted to set up a date!

PLEASE NOTE: WE DO NOT SHIP OUR ANIMALS. We can only accept applications from interested parties who are in or near San Diego County, California at this time.
