Also known as the African Spurred Tortoise, Sulcata Tortoises originate from north central Africa. They are widely breed and kept captive around the world. They are often acquired as hatching of anywhere from 2-6 inches by people unsuspecting of the sheer size and age these animals can grow to. It is not uncommon fro a well care for sulcata to reach 100-200lbs and live 100-150 years. This is a digging tortoise which can reach depths of up to 60 feet and as an adult can be quite destructive. All of this leads to many people seeking to rehome, release to shelters, abandon, or sometimes just losing their turtles as strays.
